Motor Trend SafeKeeper Car Cover
The Motor Trend SafeKeeper All Weather Car Cover is a highly recommended product for those looking to protect their vehicles from various outdoor elements. With its advanced protection formula and six-layer construction, this car cover offers superior waterproofing and durability. In this review, I will share my personal experience with the product and provide a conclusion based on its overall performance.
I was initially impressed with the Motor Trend SafeKeeper Car Cover. Compared to custom covers I have purchased in the past, this cover proved to be of better quality. The multiple heavy-duty layers, including the enhanced compounded comfort layer and breathable outer waterproof EVA, provided excellent protection for both the interior and exterior of my vehicle. The cover's 176-inch length was perfect for my sedan, ensuring complete coverage down to the tires.
However, after four months of exposure to heavy California sun, I noticed some disintegration of the surface layer, with dirt and dust becoming baked into the top plastic layer. Despite my efforts to clean the cover, it eventually became brittle and developed tears after only five months of use. I contacted Motor Trend Store Support and was able to get a replacement cover, but unfortunately, the same issues persisted.
Impressive Initial Impression

The Motortrend Safekeeper car cover has left a strong first impression on me. Compared to the custom covers I've purchased in the past, this cover surpasses them in terms of quality and performance. In the past, I've spent a significant amount of money on custom covers, believing that the higher price would guarantee better protection. However, I was proven wrong as those covers disintegrated within a year or even less. The lifetime warranties that were promised suddenly became void. In contrast, the Motortrend Safekeeper cover is showing promising durability. If it lasts more than 12 months, I'll be extremely satisfied, as that's already longer than any of the more expensive custom covers I've owned. The cover is thick, soft, and features sewn-in straps on the front, middle, and rear, ensuring a secure fit even on windy days. While it lacks custom mirror pockets and an antenna glove, I'm willing to overlook those features for the overall protection and appearance it provides for my vehicle.
Disintegration with Sun Exposure

After four months of constant exposure to the hot California sun, the Motortrend Safekeeper cover has shown some signs of wear. While it has held up against tears, the surface layer has begun to disintegrate, with dirt and dust becoming embedded in the top plastic layer. Attempting to wash off the dirt stains has been unsuccessful, and this has been a disappointment. Unfortunately, after only five months of use, the cover has become brittle and developed numerous tears. However, I must note that I contacted MotorTrend Store Support and was able to receive a warranty replacement after providing photos and purchase information. The replacement cover lasted an additional four months, but ultimately experienced the same sun damage and deterioration. Despite these setbacks, I have yet to find a car cover that performs better at a similar price point. While I would prefer a longer-lasting solution, I am considering replacing the cover with a new one from my own pocket due to the lack of viable alternatives.
Great Value for a Weatherproof Cover

The Motortrend Safekeeper car cover offers great value for its price. It provides excellent protection against various weather conditions, with its heavy-duty construction and waterproof outer layer. The felt-like base ensures that the cover won't damage the paint job of your vehicle. The elastic front and rear, coupled with the extra strap buckle in the middle, contribute to a secure fit. The cover is thick and durable, making it superior to the flimsy options commonly found at auto parts stores. Overall, it is a reliable and cost-effective choice for those in need of a universal car cover.
Longevity in Extreme Desert Conditions

While the Motortrend Safekeeper cover performed admirably in extreme desert temperatures above 112 degrees for three months, it ultimately succumbed to the force of 70mph tropical storm winds. However, considering the challenging conditions it faced, the cover did an excellent job of protecting the car during the rainy part of the storm. It also helped to keep the inside of the car cooler than the actual air temperature. The cover's elastic corners aided in its ability to stay put during windy days, and its ease of use was appreciated. However, throwing the middle strap tie under the car proved to be a bit challenging at times. It would be helpful if the designers made the tie longer for easier maneuvering. Despite these minor drawbacks, the Motortrend Safekeeper cover remains the best option for its price range, particularly for individuals living in hot desert environments with occasional severe storms.
Sturdy and Not Flimsy
The Motortrend Safekeeper car cover stands out from the cheap, flimsy covers commonly found at auto parts stores. It offers excellent quality and durability, providing reliable protection for your vehicle. The cover's soft interior ensures that it won't cause any damage to your paint job, while its heavy-duty exterior effectively shields your car from the elements. It is a worthwhile investment for those seeking a long-lasting and dependable car cover.
Mixed Results After 18 Months
The Motortrend Safekeeper cover initially seemed like a perfect fit for my 1986 Pontiac Firebird. It provided excellent protection for 18 months, with occasional removal and inside storage. The cover displayed a snug fit around the bumpers, and the buckling snaps at the front, back, and middle worked effectively. However, after 18 months, cracks began to appear all over the cover, compromising its water resistance and allowing moisture to become trapped underneath. Despite the initial satisfaction, the cover's lack of longevity is disappointing. Contacting the manufacturer for assistance proved futile, as they did not respond. I cannot recommend this car cover unless you are willing to replace it every 1-2 years.
Accurate Fit and Good Padding
The Motortrend Safekeeper car cover stands out for its accurate size options, unlike some other brands. This cover fits perfectly, providing full-length coverage that extends past the wheel rims. The padding is of good quality, with a soft interior and a waterproof exterior. Overall, it is a reliable choice and one that I would purchase again.
Stood the Test of Time
The Motortrend Safekeeper car cover has proven its durability over time. It has endured the elements of heat, wind, and sun while providing great protection for our van. The cover is easy to use and offers excellent quality for its price. I highly recommend it, especially for those seeking reliable protection for their vehicles.
